1 John 5:4-5
"For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?"
The victory (nike) over the world: not a political or military victory, but victory over the worldly value system. The instrument: faith in Jesus as the Son of God. Faith overcomes the world because it connects the believer to the Victor of the world (John 16:33).
1 John 5:11-12
"And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life."
Eternal life is in the Son—not in rituals, not in merits, not in experiences. Having the Son = having life. Not having the Son = not having life. The radical simplicity of the Gospel: everything depends on the relationship with Christ.
