1 Peter — Chapter 5

The Shepherd of Shepherds and Humility

"Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you."

— 1 Pet 5:6

1 Peter 5 concludes with instructions for the elders, the call to humility and vigilance, and the promise of God’s grace in suffering.

👑 The Shepherd of Shepherds (5:1-4)

1 Pet 5:2-4
"Shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory."
Peter’s pastoral model: voluntary (not forced), generous (not greedy), exemplary (not domineering). The chief Shepherd (archipoimenos) — Christ — is the model and judge of all shepherds. The crown of glory is the reward for the faithful pastor.

🦁 Vigilance Against the Adversary (5:8-11)

1 Pet 5:8-9
"Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world."
The devil as a roaring lion: image of power and real threat. The resistance: sobriety (nepsate), vigilance (gregoreuete), firmness in faith. Solidarity: the same sufferings are experienced by the worldwide brotherhood — individual suffering is part of a collective experience.
