Caring for Widows and Elders

👩 Widows (5:3-16)

1 Tim 5:3-5
"Honor widows who are truly widows. But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show godliness to their own household and to repay their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God."
The early Church had a 'roll of widows' — women dedicated to prayer and service ministry. The qualifications: truly widowed (without family), over 60 years old, faithful to her husband, known for good works. The family has the primary responsibility — the Church cares when the family cannot.

👑 Elders (5:17-25)

1 Tim 5:17-19
"Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. For the Scripture says, ‘You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,’ and, ‘The laborer deserves his wages.’ Do not admit an accusation against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses."
The 'double honor' (diplaes times) includes respect and remuneration. Paul cites Deut 25:4 and Luke 10:7 to support the provision for ministers. Protecting elders from false accusations is essential — but public discipline is necessary when fault is proven.
