1 Timothy — Chapter 6

Contentment and the Good Confession

"For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils."

— 1 Tim 6:10

1 Timothy 6 concludes with warnings about the love of money, exhortation to godliness with contentment, and the final charge to Timothy.

💰 Godliness with Contentment (6:6-19)

1 Tim 6:6-10
"But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires... For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils."
The equation of true wealth: godliness + contentment = great gain. The love of money (philargyria)—not money itself, but the love of it—is the root of all evils. Material wealth is neutral; love for it is destructive.
1 Tim 6:17-19
"As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God... to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future."
For those who are already rich: not prohibition, but instruction. Four commands: do not be haughty, do not trust in riches, be rich in good works, be generous. Material wealth can be converted into eternal wealth through generosity.
