2 Corinthians — Chapter 8

The Grace of Generosity

"For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor."

— 2 Cor 8:9

2 Corinthians 8-9 is the most extensive teaching in the NT on Christian generosity. Chapter 8 uses the example of the Macedonian churches and of Christ as motivation for giving.

💰 Macedonian Generosity and the Example of Christ (8:1-15)

2 Cor 8:1-5

"We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part."

The Macedonian churches (Philippi, Thessalonica, Berea) gave generously despite extreme poverty. The paradox: deep poverty + abundant joy = rich generosity. Generosity is not a function of wealth — it is a function of grace.

2 Cor 8:9

"For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich."

The theological foundation of generosity: the incarnation of Christ. He was rich (plousios) — possessing all divine glory — and became poor (ptochos) — taking on human condition and death. Our generosity is a response to Christ’s generosity.
