2 Thessalonians — Chapter 3

Work and Community Discipline

"For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat."

— 2 Thes 3:10

2 Thessalonians 3 addresses the problem of the 'idle' — members who stopped working expecting the imminent coming of Christ.

💼 Work and Order (3:6-15)

2 Thes 3:10-12
"For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living."
The principle of work: eschatological hope is no excuse for idleness. Paul himself worked with his own hands as an example. Community discipline: do not associate with the idle, but do not treat them as enemies — exhort them as brothers.
