2 Timothy — Chapter 2

The Soldier, the Athlete, and the Farmer

"Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus."

— 2 Tim 2:1

2 Timothy 2 uses three metaphors — soldier, athlete, farmer — to describe the Christian ministry, and presents the 'faithful saying' concerning death and resurrection with Christ.

⚔️ Three Metaphors of Ministry (2:3-7)

2 Tim 2:3-6
"Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. Also, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor’s crown unless he competes according to the rules. It is the hardworking farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops."
Three metaphors of ministry: (1) Soldier — focus, separation from the world, loyalty to the commander; (2) Athlete — discipline, rules, reward; (3) Farmer — hard work, patience, sharing in the fruits. Each metaphor illuminates a different aspect of faithful ministry.

📖 The Word of God Is Not Bound (2:8-13)

2 Tim 2:9-10
"for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory."
Paul is chained, but the Word of God is free. Apostolic suffering has a purpose: the salvation of the elect. The 'faithful saying' of 2:11-13 is likely a baptismal hymn: to die with Christ → to live; to endure → to reign; to deny → to be denied; to be unfaithful → Christ remains faithful.
