Hebrews — Chapter 1

The Son Superior to the Angels

"Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son."

— Heb 1:1-2

Hebrews is the most theologically sophisticated letter in the NT — a homily on the superiority of Christ over all previous revelation. Chapter 1 proclaims Christ as the Son superior to the angels.

👑 The Son Heir of All Things (1:1-4)

Heb 1:1-4
"Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high."
The most literary opening in the NT — a 4-verse period in Greek. Christ is presented with 7 attributes: (1) heir of all things; (2) creator of the universe; (3) radiance of glory (apaugasma tes doxes); (4) exact imprint of nature (charakter tes hypostaseos); (5) sustainer of all things; (6) purifier of sins; (7) seated at the right hand of God. The progression moves from creation to redemption to exaltation.

🌟 Superior to the Angels (1:5-14)

Heb 1:5-6
"For to which of the angels did God ever say, ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you’? Or again, ‘I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son’? And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, ‘Let all God’s angels worship him.’"
The chain of 7 Old Testament quotations proves Christ’s superiority over the angels. Angels are servants (leitourgika pneumata); the Son is King. The angels’ worship of the Son (Ps 97:7) confirms his divinity — angels worship God alone.
