Hebrews — Chapter 10

The Definitive Sacrifice and Perseverance

"Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward."

— Heb 10:35

Hebrews 10 concludes the doctrinal section with the unique and definitive sacrifice of Christ, the fourth warning (against abandoning the faith), and the call to perseverance.

✝️ The Unique Sacrifice (10:1-18)

Heb 10:10-14
"And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God."
The definitive contrast: the priests stand (work never finished), Christ sat down (work accomplished). 'Once for all' (ephapax) — the absolute sufficiency of Christ’s sacrifice. It does not need to be repeated — neither in the mass nor in any other rite.

⚠️ Fourth Warning: Do Not Abandon (10:26-31)

Heb 10:26-27
"For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries."
The fourth warning: to sin 'deliberately' (hekousios) after receiving the knowledge of the truth — deliberate apostasy. There is no longer a sacrifice available because the one sacrifice has been rejected. The severity corresponds to the privilege received.
