Hebrews — Chapter 5

The High Priest According to the Order of Melchizedek

"You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek."

— Heb 5:6

Hebrews 5 develops the priesthood of Christ according to the order of Melchizedek — superior to the Aaronic priesthood — and includes the third warning: against spiritual immaturity.

👑 The Priesthood of Christ (5:1-10)

Heb 5:7-9
"In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him."
The full humanity of Christ: 'loud cries and tears' — the agony of Gethsemane. Christ learned (emathen) obedience — not that he was disobedient, but that obedience was tested and deepened through suffering. The perfection (teleiotheis) is the priestly qualification through the experience of suffering.
