James — Chapter 3

The Power of the Tongue and Wisdom from Above

"But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits."

— James 3:17

James 3 contains the most extensive teaching in the NT about the tongue — the most powerful and dangerous organ of the human body.

👅 The Power of the Tongue (3:1-12)

James 3:5-8
"So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell."
Four metaphors of the tongue: bridle on a horse, rudder on a ship, spark in a forest, fire of hell. The tongue is disproportionate to its size — small, yet with cosmic destructive power. 'Set on fire by hell' (phlogizomene hypo tes geennes) — the uncontrolled tongue has a diabolical origin.

🌿 Wisdom from Above (3:13-18)

James 3:17-18
"But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace."
Heavenly wisdom vs. earthly: earthly is bitter, jealous, quarrelsome, demonic; heavenly is pure, peaceable, gentle, open to reason, merciful, fruitful, impartial, sincere. True wisdom is recognized by its fruit — especially peace.
