James — Chapter 4

Humility Before God

"Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you."

— Jas 4:10

James 4 diagnoses the root of conflicts (carnal desires), calls for repentance and humility, and warns against judging brothers.

⚔️ The Root of Conflicts (4:1-6)

Jas 4:1-3
"What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions."
The anatomy of conflicts: desires (hedonon) warring internally produce external conflicts. Selfish prayer is not answered — asking to spend on pleasures is using God as a supplier of carnal desires.

🙏 Humility and Repentance (4:7-10)

Jas 4:7-10
"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you."
Ten imperatives in four verses: submit, resist, draw near, cleanse, purify, be wretched, mourn, weep, humble — and the promise: God will exalt. The sequence: submission to God → resistance to the devil → drawing near to God. Humility is not self-deprecation — it is the correct positioning before God.
