Philippians — Chapter 1

Joy in Prison

"For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain."

— Phil 1:21

Philippians is the letter of joy — written from prison, the word 'joy' appears 16 times. Chapter 1 presents joy in suffering and Paul's dilemma: to live or to die.

😊 Joy in Prison (1:12-26)

Phil 1:12-14
"Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ."
The paradox of imprisonment: what seemed an obstacle became an opportunity. The imperial guard (elite soldiers) heard the Gospel. Paul's imprisonment encouraged others to preach with greater boldness. God uses adverse circumstances to advance the Gospel.
Phil 1:21-23
"For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better."
Paul’s dilemma: living = Christ (not just for Christ, but Christ Himself is the content of life); dying = gain (being with Christ). Death is not loss — it is gain. This is the foundation of Christian peace in the face of death.
