Revelation — Chapter 21

The New Creation

"Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away."

— Rev 21:1 (ESV)

Revelation 21 is the most hopeful chapter in the Bible — the vision of the new creation, the New Jerusalem, and the eternal dwelling of God with mankind.

🌟 The New Creation (21:1-8)

Rev 21:3-5
"And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.’"
The fulfillment of the whole history of redemption: God dwelling with mankind. The covenant formula ('I will be their God, and they shall be my people') finally fulfilled in fullness. Five negations: no more death, mourning, crying, pain, former things. The new creation is defined by what will no longer be.

🏙️ The New Jerusalem (21:9-27)

Rev 21:22-23
"And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb."
The New Jerusalem has no temple — because God himself is the temple. The absence of the temple is the total presence of God. There is no sun or moon — the glory of God is the eternal light. The Lamb is the lamp (lychnos) — Christ illuminates the new creation with his own glory.
