The High Priestly Prayer of Jesus — The Prayer for Unity

Jesus’ greatest prayer: for his glorification, for the disciples, and for the unity of all believers

🙏 The Prayer for Glorification (17:1-5)

John 17:1-5
"These things Jesus spoke, and lifting up his eyes to heaven, he said, ‘Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you... And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.’"
The prayer in chapter 17 is called the 'High Priestly Prayer' — Jesus intercedes as the high priest before entering the sanctuary of the cross. 'The hour has come' (elēlthen hē hōra) — the hour of glorification, which in John is simultaneously the hour of crucifixion. The cross is Jesus’ glory — not despite death, but through it. 'The glory that I had with you before the world existed' — Jesus prays for the restoration of his pre-incarnate glory. The incarnation was a kenosis — an emptying; the resurrection and ascension are the restoration of full divine glory.

🤝 The Prayer for Unity (17:20-23)

John 17:20-23
"I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me... that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me."
Jesus prays for all who will believe in him through the apostles’ testimony — including all Christians of all ages. The unity he requests is modeled on Trinitarian unity: 'just as you are in me and I am in you.' It is not institutional uniformity — it is communion of love and purpose. The purpose of unity is missional: 'so that the world may believe.' The division of the Church is an obstacle to Christian witness. Unity is not an optional luxury — it is essential for the mission. This prayer of Jesus is both a mandate and a promise: he prays for this unity, and his prayer is always heard.
